Americas team fell short amidst controversy last year, how are they set to fair in 2018?
Reasons to be cheerful?
Zeke is not under threat of suspension. In the first 3 games of his suspension the Cowboys put up 22 points total. His importance to the team is as great as any other star play to any other franchise in the league. He is the hope upon which all success is pinned. 983 yards in 10 games last year, expect 1300+ this season with double digit scores.
Dak Prescott was handed a gift in newly drafted WR Michael Gallup. The Colorado State Alumni put up 2690yards and 21 TDs in his 2 years in the NCAA whilst playing a full slate of 26 games. Expect him to feature from the off, he has a great chance of leading this receiving corps in yards, scores and receptions.
Reasons to be fearful?
Jerry Jones is itching to replace Jason Garrett. No coach goes 3 seasons under Jerry without making the playoffs and survives. The team simply hasn’t delivered in recent seasons, Garrett is basically at .500 in his career as coach and regardless of extenuating circumstances last year the team didn’t do enough when the big questions were asked.
The WR unit is poor. Gallop is unproved, Terrence Williams failed to score last season despite 53 receptions for 500+ yards (7 scores in last 3 years total) and Allen Hurns has missed 7 games in the last 2 seasons whilst putting up less than a 1000 yards and just 5 scores. The Cowboys will try to get the most out of Tavon Austin which may not breed much of a result with any regularity.
The team have failed to replace Jason Witten at TE with anyone suitable. Geoff Swain, Blake Jarwin and Rico Gathers are all fighting over the starting role, this should’ve been solved by now.
Randy Gregory returns to the folds on Defense and for the life of me I cant see why. Having missed 34 games from a possible 48 during his career for a variety of off-field incidents it seems likely that he will only cause further disruption to a team that is always in the spotlight.
How does the season shape up?
They have a shot at the Playoffs without doubt, ultimately it comes down to Garrett making the right calls and the WR group playing out of its skin. Zeke gives the team a chance to win in every game. We’ve barely mentioned Dak here because he still requires so much time to prove himself. If he has a break out year then the Cowboys will be fine, but if he struggles and the INT rate continues to climb then Zekes abilities may be worth nought. The loss of Witten may hold Dak back.
Playoffs? Only as a wildcard. My money is on no despite some Steller performances throughout the year.
