Ok so they were unlucky last year to miss out on the post season because they could make Field Goals. Hopefully that issue has now been put to bed.
Reasons to be cheerful?
With shake ups at QB in Kansas City (Mahomes) and QB and RB in Denver (Keenum and Freeman) I’d contend that Rivers and Gordon are the best QB-RB duo in the AFC West by some distance. This offensive firepower combined with a defense that’s stacked with talent should be enough to overwhelm most of the opponents they face.
I love that after just 9 games in 2 seasons Keenan Allen Played the full 16 regular season matchups last year without a hint of injury issues flaring up. Hes a sure fire no.1 WR averaging 13.7 yards per catch and on the opposite side of the field we’ll see Tyrell Williams who makes catches a-plenty of his own at 16.9 ypc. This WR Pairing will provide a strong test each week and should prevent teams stacking the box against Melvin Gordon.
Ingram and Bosa are the best Pass-rush pairing in the NFL for my money…buuut…
Reasons to be fearful?
Joey Bosa begins the season with a foot injury and wont even play in week 1. Now, they certainly have other options but his presence is key. If this turns into a long-term issue then games will become closer than if he were on the field disrupting opposing QBs.
Strange as it sounds…Antonio Gates. Sure he could come straight in and be a force that he was for so many years, especially after a year of being no.2 behind Hunter Henry. There is a reason why the Chargers effectively relegated Gates last year though, his production was down and he had lost some pace and spring for contesting catches. He’s missed all of preseason so the thought of him being able to jump right in and be successful from the off seems unlikely to me. I hope im wrong.
How does the season shape up?
I like the chargers to really make a deep playoff run this time around. They cost themselves a post-season shot last year by not having a decent kicking in the first 4 games. If Caleb Sturgis can be halfway good and the team doesn’t encounter as much bad luck with injuries as last year they’ll be there in January.
Playoffs? If not then something has gone very wrong.
